What is the difference between Comprehensive Health Insurance of Foreign Nationals and Insurance of Necessary and Urgent Care of Foreign Nationals?

Comprehensive Health Insurance of Foreign Nationals is intended, in particular, for those staying in the Czech Republic in the long term and interested in comprehensive medical care in contractual medical facilities without direct reimbursement of the cost of treatment. Within this insurance, it is possible to take out additional insurance of pregnancy or additional insurance of a child up to one year of age. Insurance of Necessary and Urgent Care applies only to acute treatment and is predominantly sought after by those planning to stay in the Czech Republic for less than 3 months.

Are there any situations not covered by this insurance?

This insurance cannot be applied in the case of so-called medical tourism (i.e. intentional travel to the Slovak Republic for the purpose of receiving medical care) if the natural person is a participant of the public health insurance of the Slovak Republic, and it cannot be applied for illnesses and accidents that occurred before the conclusion of the insurance contract. Furthermore, the insurance does not cover interventions that are not medically or legally accepted, nor does it cover damages caused intentionally, damages caused by a violation of a medical treatment procedure or in the case of fault or contributory fault. The insurance does not cover damages (except for accidents) resulting from the consumption of alcohol, drugs and other psychotropic substances, physiotherapy treatment which is not necessary for the elimination of immediate medical complications, and cosmetic and aesthetic operations which are not part of the treatment.

Can my partner take out this insurance for me?

Yes, it is possible. The person arranging the insurance will be named in the policy as the policyholder and the person in whose name the policy is made will be the insured. The policyholder will need his/her identity document to conclude the contract, as well as the details of the insured person (his/her full name, date of birth, nationality, passport number and the address where he/she will reside in the Slovak Republic).

Is a foreigner obliged to have health insurance in the Slovak Republic?

Yes, it is. Foreigners can choose between two types of insurance: public health insurance or commercial health insurance. Slovak public health insurance covers persons regardless of nationality who are permanent residents of the Slovak Republic and also persons who are not permanent residents of the Slovak Republic but are employed by a company based in the Slovak Republic. If a person does not meet either of these conditions, he/she must be covered by commercial health insurance.  Both insurances are acceptable for the visa.

I am a foreigner living in Slovakia who is planning to get pregnant or is already pregnant. Is there any insurance option for me?

Yes, the Maxima insurance company offers these women supplementary insurance MAMIČKA under the Comprehensive health insurance for foreigners. For more information, please contact your local Maxima branch.
